MyFitnessPal is the best-known calorie counter, and also one of the most confusing to price: it has a free version, two paid tiers, and different prices on its website and in its app. We make Calorix, a competing app, so every fact on this page comes from MyFitnessPal’s own pages or its App Store listing, checked on October 11, 2026.
What’s free in MyFitnessPal
MyFitnessPal says “the standard features of MyFitnessPal are free to use” (help center). Its comparison of the tiers lists these as free (help center):
- logging food and exercise, and logging your weight and measurements
- creating your own foods, meals and recipes
- seeing your macronutrients, and setting calorie and macro goals by percentage
- sharing your diary, connecting partner apps, and a printable report on the web
The free version shows ads, and some ways of logging need Premium.
What Premium adds
According to the same comparison, Premium unlocks the barcode scanner, Meal Scan (logging from a photo), intermittent fasting, macro goals by gram, net carbs and an ad-free app; MyFitnessPal’s list of Premium features also includes voice logging (help center).
The barcode scanner is the big one for most people: “As of October 1, 2022, Barcode Scan is available only with a Premium subscription,” MyFitnessPal’s help center says (help center), and that was still the case on October 11, 2026. If a free barcode scanner is what you need, see the alternatives below.
How much MyFitnessPal Premium costs: website vs app
| Where you buy | Monthly | Yearly |
|---|---|---|
| On MyFitnessPal’s website | $9.99 | $49.99 |
| In the iPhone app (US App Store) | $9.99 or $19.99 | $49.99 or $79.99 |
MyFitnessPal’s Premium page sells Premium at “$9.99 / month” or “$49.99 / year”, the yearly plan billed as “58% savings over the Monthly Plan” (myfitnesspal.com). In the app, the US App Store lists MyFitnessPal’s own “Monthly Premium” purchases at $9.99 and $19.99 and its “Yearly Premium” ones at $49.99 and $79.99 (App Store). MyFitnessPal’s October 2025 pricing post also gave the app price as “$79.99/yr or $19.99/mo”.
So if you want Premium, buying it on the website can cost as little as half the app price. The catch: a website subscription is managed and canceled on the website, not in your iPhone’s settings.
MyFitnessPal Premium+
Premium+ adds a meal plan builder, meal prep mode, more than 1,500 recipes, diet preferences and grocery lists on top of Premium. MyFitnessPal’s pricing post put it at “$99.99/yr or $24.99/mo”, or “$1.67 more per month” than Premium in the app (MyFitnessPal blog, October 2025 version; the live post blocked automated access on October 11, 2026). Premium+ is sold in the US, the UK, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia, and its features work only in the iOS and Android apps (help center).
The free trial
MyFitnessPal offers a 7-day free trial of Premium: “If you’ve never upgraded to MyFitnessPal Premium or never started a Premium trial before, you are eligible for a 7-day free trial” (myfitnesspal.com). Premium+ has a 7-day trial too.
How to cancel MyFitnessPal Premium
MyFitnessPal’s rule: “you must process a request to cancel your renewal using the same platform on which you originally paid” (help center).
- Bought in the iPhone app: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → MyFitnessPal → Cancel Subscription.
- Bought on the website: sign in at myfitnesspal.com, click Settings, then Subscription Settings, and turn Auto-Renewal off.
Premium stays active until the end of the period you paid for. MyFitnessPal warns that if you cancel less than 24 hours before the renewal, it may still renew.
Refunds
For subscriptions started on the App Store, MyFitnessPal says “only Apple can help assist with any cancellation or refund requests”: sign in to reportaproblem.apple.com and choose “Request a refund” (Apple Support). For a subscription bought on the website, contact MyFitnessPal’s support.
Is MyFitnessPal Premium worth it?
That depends on which Premium features you’d use. If you mostly search for foods and type them in, the free version covers it. If you want to scan barcodes, log from photos or by voice, or track fasting in the same app, those need Premium, at $49.99 a year on the website or up to $79.99 a year in the app. MyFitnessPal also owns Cal AI, a separate photo-first app with its own subscription, since a deal that closed in December 2025.
Alternatives with a free barcode scanner
- Cronometer: its free Basic plan includes “unlimited use of our Barcode Scanner”; Gold is $10.99 a month or $59.99 a year (Cronometer).
- Yazio: the free version includes a barcode scanner, per its App Store listing; AI photo tracking is part of Yazio Pro.
- Calorix (our app): barcode lookups are free with no daily limit, plus 3 free AI scans a day. Pro costs $9.99 a month or $39.99 a year in the US after a 3-day free trial (Calorix pricing).
More options, free and paid, are in MyFitnessPal alternatives, and a head-to-head in Calorix vs MyFitnessPal.
