Yazio, made in Erfurt, Germany, is popular across Europe; MyFitnessPal is one of the best-known calorie counters in the US. Both have a free plan and a paid one, but they draw the line in different places and bill very differently. We make Calorix, a third, competing app, and we don’t rank these two: every fact here comes from each company’s help centre, website or App Store listing, checked on October 23, 2026.
The short version
- Free: Yazio’s free version includes a barcode scanner and a basic fasting tracker; MyFitnessPal’s includes macros and macro goals, but its scanner and fasting are Premium.
- Paid: Yazio PRO is paid upfront for 3, 6 or 12 months, with no monthly option; MyFitnessPal Premium can be monthly or yearly and is cheapest on its website.
- Both charge for photo logging.
Free versions compared
Yazio Free, per its App Store listing: a “Calorie tracker with barcode scanner”, a “Food database with 4 million+ searchable items”, a water tracker, an “Optional fasting tracker” and “Instant access with no signup required”.
MyFitnessPal Free: food and exercise logging, measurements, creating foods, meals and recipes, viewing your macronutrients, goals by percentage, sharing your diary and partner apps. The barcode scanner (“available only with a Premium subscription” since October 1, 2022), Meal Scan, intermittent fasting, net carbs and data export are Premium (MyFitnessPal help).
What the paid plans add
Yazio PRO: AI food tracking from a photo, future meal planning, the Smart Food Rating, detailed nutrients, 3,000+ recipes, grocery lists, activity sync with Fitbit, Samsung Health, Garmin and Polar, all fasting plans and a mood tracker (Yazio help). Its AI tracking “was initially available to all users for free and is now part of Yazio Pro.”
MyFitnessPal Premium: the barcode scanner, Meal Scan, voice logging, intermittent fasting, macros by gram and by meal, goals by day, food analysis, net carbs, data export and no ads. Premium+ adds a meal planner, 1,500+ recipes and grocery lists.
Price and billing
| Plan | Yazio PRO (US App Store) | MyFitnessPal Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | not possible | $9.99 on the website; $9.99 or $19.99 in the app |
| 3 months | $23.99 | not offered |
| 6 months | $34.99 | not offered |
| 12 months | $23.90 or $47.90 | $49.99 on the website; $49.99 or $79.99 in the app |
Yazio publishes no price list and charges “the full amount at the beginning of your selected period … A monthly payment is not possible” (Yazio help); its 7-day free trial is offered only “occasionally” and only on its website. MyFitnessPal sells Premium at “$49.99 / year” or “$9.99 / month” on its website with a 7-day free trial (myfitnesspal.com). Details: Yazio PRO price and MyFitnessPal Premium price.
Food data
Yazio lists “4 million+ searchable items”; MyFitnessPal “20.5M+ foods, including restaurant dishes”, a mix of “foods added by MyFitnessPal” and “foods that are added by our users” (MyFitnessPal help). If you eat a lot of US restaurant or branded food, MyFitnessPal’s size helps; if you shop in Europe, check that the barcodes you buy are found in either.
Platforms and languages
Both run on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Android, and both are available in 20 languages on the App Store. MyFitnessPal also has a website you can log on and Wear OS support.
When Yazio is the better choice
- You want a free barcode scanner and a fasting tracker without paying.
- You’ll pay once for a year of PRO, where its cheaper offers cost less than MyFitnessPal Premium.
- You want recipes and meal planning built around your goals, or to start without creating an account.
When MyFitnessPal is the better choice
- You want macros and macro goals on the free plan.
- You prefer to pay monthly, or to log on the web.
- You eat out often and want restaurant dishes in the database.
Our app: Calorix
We make Calorix, so it isn’t part of the comparison. It’s an iPhone-only calorie app with free barcode lookups, 3 free AI photo scans a day and free basic fasting plans; Pro is $9.99 a month or $39.99 a year in the US after a 3-day free trial. It has no Android or web app. See Calorix vs Yazio.
